Book Reports
1st Grade Book Reports
Reading and talking about books is the main priority in 1st grade. Students will complete a book report twice each month for an at-home project. Each month we will focus on a different skill that we have mastered in class. The book report can be as basic as answering the questions on the provided paper or as elaborate as a poster board (small). Do what works best for you and your child. Parents, PLEASE DO NOT do it or write it for your child, be there to discuss it, and guide them, but let them complete it.
Students should be reading books for their book reports at their reading level. As you read other books each day talk about these things throughout the year.
At the beginning of each month, the book report instructions, rubric, and due dates will be assigned in Google Classroom. Please review the rubric for guidance.

August / September Book Report
1st Grade
Students have been learning about what it means to have a beginning, middle, and end to the story. Each story has an order, and if we tell the story out of order it won’t make sense. Choose a book you and your child have read to talk about and complete a book report. Remember the report can be as simple as completing the attached paper with illustrations or you can get as creative as you want as long as all the information is included.
Book reports due: Friday, August 27 & Friday, September 17 - Please refer to the rubric for guidance.
October Book Report
1st Grade
Students have been learning about what it means to have elements in a story. Each story has characters, settings (where the story takes place, a problem, and a solution (how the problem is solved). Choose a book you and your child have read, talk about it, and complete a book report. Remember the report can be as simple as completing a read and respond worksheet with illustrations or you can get as creative as you want as long as all the required information is included.
Book reports due: Friday, October 1 – Friday, October 22- Please refer to the rubric for guidance.
November Book Report
1st Grade
Students have been learning about sequencing in a story and using transition words when writing. Each story has an order of when events happen. We can use words such as first, next, and last when retelling or writing about a story. Choose a book you and your child have read, talk about it, and complete a book report. Remember the report can be as simple as completing a read and respond worksheet with illustrations or you can get as creative as you want as long as all the required information is included.
Book reports due: November 5 – November 19 - Please refer to the rubric for guidance.
December Book Report
1st Grade
Students have been reading non-fiction books about animals. There are many facts we can get out of a non-fiction animal book. Look for things about what the animal looks like, how big it can get, where it lives, what it eats, and more! Choose a non-fiction animal book you and your child have read, talk about it, and complete a book report. Remember the report can be as simple as completing a read and respond worksheet with illustrations or you can get as creative as you want as long as all the required information is included.
Book report due: Friday, December 10 - Please refer to the rubric for guidance.
January Book Report
1st Grade
Students have been working on coming up with an opinion and supporting it with 3 reasons. Choose a book you and your child have read, talk about it, and complete a book report. Students should write a topic sentence introducing the book, 3 sentences why you like the book, and a closing sentence. Remember the report can be as simple as completing a read and respond worksheet with illustrations or you can get as creative as you want as long as all the required information is included.

February Book Report
1st Grade
Students have been reading non-fiction books about people, biographies. There are many facts we can get out of a biography. Choose 3 interesting facts to write about the biography book. Choose a biography you and your child have read, talk about it, and complete a book report. Remember the report can be as simple as completing a read and respond worksheet with illustrations or you can get as creative as you want as long as all the required information is included.
Book reports due: February 4 – February 25 - Please refer to the rubric for guidance.
March Book Report
1st Grade
Students have been learning about characters' feelings throughout a story. Characters can change how they feel throughout the story. Students will choose 2 events in the book and describe and illustrate how the character feels. Choose a book you and your child have read, talk about it, and complete a book. Remember the report can be as simple as completing a read and respond worksheet with illustrations or you can get as creative as you want as long as all the required information is included.
Book reports due: March 11 – March 26 - Please refer to the rubric for guidance.
April Book Report
1st Grade
Students have been learning about lessons that fairy tale books teach. Choose a book you and your child have read to talk about and complete a book report. Write and illustrate the moral/lesson of the story. Remember the report can be as simple as completing a read and respond worksheet with illustrations or you can get as creative as you want as long as all the required information is included.
Book reports due: Thursday, April 15 – Thursday, April 29 - Please refer to the rubric for guidance.
May Book Report
1st Grade
Students have been learning about how books relate to themselves and other books. Choose a book you and your child have read to talk about and complete a book report. Students will write and illustrate how the book connects to them and how the book connects to another book they have read. Remember the report can be as simple as completing a read and respond worksheet with illustrations or you can get as creative as you want as long as all the required information is included.
